Event Catering Ideas for Charity Sports Days
A charity sports day has all the ingredients for a brilliant community event: friendly competition, plenty of spectators, enthusiastic volunteers and at least one person who takes the parents’ race considerably more seriously than everyone else.
Add the right food and entertainment and it can become much more than an afternoon of races. G Force Amusements can provide event catering, inflatable games, funfair attractions and other entertainment for charity sports days throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Here are some ideas for putting the catering side of your event together.
1. Give Spectators Something to Enjoy Between Events
Not everyone attending a charity sports day will be competing. Parents, grandparents, friends and other supporters may spend several hours at the venue, so refreshments can make a substantial difference to their experience.
Traditional popcorn is an easy fit for a family audience. Visitors can pick some up and carry it with them while moving between races, games and other attractions.
Candy floss brings considerably more of a funfair feel to proceedings and can work especially well when a sports day has developed into a larger family fun day with entertainment continuing after the main competitions have finished.
2. Fresh Donuts After a Day of Competition
After running, jumping, climbing and competing all afternoon, something sweet is unlikely to be difficult to sell to the idea of.
Our Dinky Donuts are freshly prepared at the event, producing the familiar smell of hot donuts that tends to advertise the stall rather effectively on its own.
They can suit everything from a school charity afternoon to a large community sports festival, particularly where visitors are likely to remain on site for several hours.
3. Turn the Catering into Another Activity
Food doesn’t necessarily have to be something visitors simply collect from a stall.
Our Toast Your Own Marshmallows setup creates another experience within the event. Guests toast their own marshmallows around a specially designed gas fire pit while the activity is managed by our trained team.
It’s particularly well suited to charity events taking place later in the year, when a sports or activity day can finish with an autumn evening celebration.
4. Build a Mini Funfair Around the Sports Day
There doesn’t have to be a sharp dividing line between the sporting programme and the rest of the entertainment.
Once the traditional races have finished, families can stay for a programme of funfair rides and attractions, catering and games. This can give a charity more opportunities to create a substantial event rather than relying solely on a couple of hours of organised races.
Depending on the audience, venue and available space, possibilities include the Spinning Teacups Carousel, Safari Train Ride, Toyset Carousel and other family attractions.
A larger programme can be developed through our funfair hire service, combining rides, traditional event food and games into one coordinated setup.
5. Add Some Sports That Definitely Won’t Be in the Olympics
The serious sporting competition may finish at the running track. The less serious competition can continue elsewhere.
Our Foot Pool attraction replaces the cue with your feet and the pool balls with footballs, creating a simple challenge that spectators and competitors can try throughout the day.
There is also the 3 in 1 Sports Inflatable, combining basketball, baseball and Velcro darts, or the Wall 2 Wall Inflatable Football Arena for football games and challenges.
These can be positioned as separate activity stations, allowing visitors to move between the sporting programme, entertainment and catering rather than concentrating everyone in one part of the site.
6. Make It Competitive
If you’ve already persuaded everyone to compete for charity, there’s little reason to stop at the finish line.
The Toxic Bootcamp Challenge Assault Course provides a very different test, with competitors racing through tunnels, obstacles, Bish Bash sections and slides. The complete course can extend to around 150ft, while individual sections can be used where the available space is more limited.
The Warrior Wall adds climbing to the programme, while Holey Moley Human Whack A Mole is considerably harder to classify as a recognised sport but considerably easier to imagine people wanting to have a go at.
For four-way competition, the Xtreme Demolition Zone challenges participants to remain on their podiums while swinging a giant inflatable demolition ball towards their opponents.
7. Think About Where the Catering Goes
Choosing what to serve is only part of catering for a busy sports day. Where the food is positioned matters too.
A good event layout should make refreshments easy to find without putting queues in the middle of activity routes. Catering can often work well near spectator areas or between different entertainment zones, where people naturally pass as they move around the event.
It also makes sense to consider when demand is likely to peak. The end of a major race programme, lunch breaks and the transition from sports day to evening entertainment can all produce sudden increases in visitors looking for refreshments.
8. Catering Can Become Part of the Fundraising Atmosphere
Charity sports days tend to work best when they feel like an occasion rather than simply a timetable of races.
Popcorn machines, candy floss, freshly cooked donuts, colourful attractions and traditional funfair rides help transform an ordinary playing field or sports ground into somewhere visitors want to explore.
That can be particularly useful when organisers want families to stay after the competitive events have finished, visit additional attractions, take part in fundraising activities and spend more time supporting the event.

Professional Equipment for Organised Charity Events

Put Food, Sport and Entertainment on the Same Team
A charity sports day doesn’t have to end when the final race finishes. With catering, inflatable challenges, family games and funfair attractions, the sporting programme can form the centrepiece of a much bigger community fundraising event.
G Force Amusements can supply individual attractions or help put together a broader package combining entertainment and catering for the audience, venue and scale of your event.
